We are pleased to inform you that the University of the Witwatersrand, one of South Africa’s finest universities, is now enrolling new students for open courses. The application window is open from March 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. To ensure an offer, submit your application as soon as possible, regardless of your ethnicity, color, or race.

Does the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) accept hard-copy applications?

The application process page will guide you. University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) encourages prospective first-time and transfer applicants to apply online. There will be no walk-in or manual applications for the 2026 admissions, as the university only accepts online applications.

When you can apply for admission: 

WITS University’s admissions portal will be accessible only from March 1, 2025, and will close on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Applicants will no longer be able to access the portal after this date.

Does WITS University charge an application fee:

As previously mentioned, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) will only accept applications submitted electronically or online. WITS will stop accepting manual applications in 2026. Candidates from South Africa must pay a R100 application cost, while those from other countries must pay a nonrefundable fee of R700.

What Programmes are available at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits):

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) offers programmes in many fields. Most of the programmes require class attendance as the programmes have a practical component. Should it be offered online, the programme page will indicate the option.

A large range of undergraduate programmes are offered by the academic Colleges at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits):

  1. Commerce, Law, and Management
  2. Engineering and the Built Environment
  3. Health Sciences
  4. Humanities
  5. Science

What are the minimum requirements for a Degree, Diploma, and certificate?

Bachelor’s Degree: A NSC with at least 30% in the language of instruction and instruction used by the higher education institution (HEI), as well as an accomplishments rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in any four (4) NSC subjects other than life orientation.

Diploma: A passing grade for a diploma is 40 per cent in four subjects with higher credits, 30 per cent in three subjects with lesser credits, and one subject may fail.

Certificate: A certificate pass requires a 40% pass in your home language, 2 subjects above 40%, 4 subjects above 30% and you may fail 1 subject. This pass allows you to study for a higher certificate.
