How to Apply Online at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

Step-by-step Online Application for first-time applicants of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for the 2026 academic intake

Step 1: Preliminary information

  • Visit www.wits.ac.za/applications to submit an online application. Select your Programs (Up to three programs total)
  • It is advisable to apply for one program in a less restrictive faculty if you submit applications for two programs in one Faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce, or Science).
  • Keep your alternatives open, especially when applying to programs in faculties like engineering or the health sciences.
  • Don’t enter the program’s duration. You are requesting admission to the first year of study.
  • A non-refundable application fee of R100 for South African citizens, and R700 for foreign citizens, is required.

Step 2: You will be sent an Acknowledgment message

  • The university will send you an email to confirm receipt of your application.
  • The acknowledgment letter will include providing a reference person that you may get in touch with if you have any questions and a person number that will become your student number.
  • On the student self-service website, all correspondence history from the university will be accessible.
  • Regularly check your application’s status and complete tasks on the student self-service site.
  • Keep your self-service contact information current.

Step 3: Upload the supporting documents that apply to you. They must be in pdf

  • If you did not upload supporting documents at the time of application, you can still do so via the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za
  • Log in with your number (not your T number) and the first six digits of your ID.
  • Current Matriculants: Upload your final Grade 11 results (no hardcopy required).
  • Already Matriculated: Upload certified copies of all your matric certificates/foreign school leaving certificates.
  • Transfer applicants: Upload a certified copy of official academic records for all tertiary registrations, inclusive of a statement/certificate of good conduct, stamped by the institution’s registrar. (Note that interim, self-service generated results will be considered for initial assessment purposes for GEMP applicants ONLY).

Step 4: Accept or Decline the offer given by WITS University

  • Current Matriculants may be made a provisional offer (depending on self-reported Grade 11 results). Please note that certain programmes have additional selection criteria (interview/audition/NBT). Refer to the Provisional Acceptance Guide.
  • Firm offers can only be confirmed after receiving final matric results.
  • Applicants who receive a firm offer will be required to go to www.wits.ac.za/registration/ for registration details.
  • Each choice of degree is treated as a separate application. The order of choice makes no difference.
  • Communication offering a firm place and information about registration and orientation programme will reflect on the self-service portal, and registration and orientation details will be available on the Wits website.
  • Places are limited, therefore you may only accept one offer. You are required to respond to the offer within a few days of your offer letter/SMS to secure your place.
  • Download the Acceptance Guide.
