All interested applicants, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or country of origin, are invited to complete the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) online admission application form for the 2026 academic year, as the application window is now open to everyone.

South African and international applicants can apply electronically for admission to SMU as government-sponsored or private candidates.

SMU 2026 Application Process: Online and Manual Options

For the 2026 academic year, you can apply either online or manually. However, online applications are currently limited to undergraduate qualifications for South African and international applicants who have completed or are pursuing the National Senior Certificate (NSC), Independent Examinations Board (IEB) certificate, or studying at other South African universities.

How to Apply Online to SMU for 2026

To apply online, you need:

Access to the internet and a valid email address;
To complete the Application Form accurately online;
To specify the names of your first and second choice degrees (if applicable);
Pay the R300 non-refundable application fee; and
Upload the following documents: certified copies of your ID/passport; Grade 11/12 results; academic record (if you have attended other universities including SMU) and proof of payment of the non-refundable application fee.

Application fees must be paid by the deadline or earlier, though applicants are encouraged to submit payments as soon as possible. If you wish to pay the application fee after the opening date, you can do so via SMU’s official bank account.

Supporting Documents Required for SMU Application

Applicants must submit the following supporting documents:

A certified copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
Certified copy of final Grade 11 results, mid-year Grade 12 results, or National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Matric Certificate (if you have completed Grade 12/Matric).
Official academic record(s) from any previous university(ies) attended, including SMU (if applicable).
Proof of application fee payment (copy of the deposit slip).

Study Permit Requirement for Non-South African Applicants

Before enrolling at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), all non-South African nationals and temporary residents are required to get a study permit. Applications for study permits should be sent to the High Commissioner, Consulate, or South African Department of Home Affairs in your country of origin or residence. SMU will be granted the permit. It is necessary to submit the study permit at the time of registration.
