Either the Common Application or the Coalition Application must be submitted by Columbia’s Early Decision deadline of November 1 or Regular Decision deadline of January 1
The Committee on Admissions will apply the same holistic review process to evaluate first-year candidates regardless of whether they submit the Common Application or the Coalition Application; there is no preference for one over the other. Please be aware that students must submit only one complete application, using either the Common Application or the Coalition Application within the application period.
To apply to Columbia University, one must pay a nonrefundable application fee of $85 in addition to other requirements. Under no circumstances will the University refund the application fee. Use an electronic check or a credit card from American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or Visa to make your online payment. When you submit your application, payment (or a waiver of the application fee) is required.
We advise you to apply for acceptance and request an automatic fee waiver if your family finds paying the application fee to be a substantial financial hardship.

The Columbia University first-year class of College and Engineering students is chosen from a large and diverse group of applicants. Columbia employs a holistic approach in assessing candidates in order to evaluate which students are the best matches for Columbia’s unique educational experience.
The Committee on Admissions takes into account each applicant’s academic potential, intellectual capacity, and capacity for independent thought when making its decision. The Committee also takes into account the applicant’s overall disposition and character, unique skills and interests, maturity, drive, curiosity, and likelihood of making the most of their four years at Columbia. No minimum GPA is set by Columbia University, and GPAs are not attempted to be reweighted to any standard other than what the school offers.
Admission for first-year and transfer students is highly selective. Over the past decade, the Committee has admitted between 5% and 10% of first-year and transfer applicants each year.

Admission to both Columbia College and Columbia Engineering is broad-based but highly selective, and the Committee on Admissions is only able to offer admission to a small fraction of all applicants. Columbia employs a holistic approach in assessing candidates in order to evaluate which students are the best matches for Columbia’s unique educational experience. A profile of the current first-year class is available for reference. Please note that Columbia University does not have a “cut-off” GPA or test score for applicants.

By going to Columbia’s profile in Scoir, students can begin the Coalition Application process for Columbia. It should be noted that students who are new to Scoir will be required to register and begin the application process. Students will be redirected to the Columbia University Supplement to the Coalition Application, hosted by Columbia, after completing their Application Profile on Scoir.
Note that Coalition applications will not be accepted if the Columbia Supplement is not completed.
For first-year applicants, Columbia requires that candidates submit an essay via the Coalition Application, utilizing the guidelines and resources available on Scoir.
For Transfer Applicants: Transfer applicants will not use the Coalition Essay found in the Scoir application. Transfer applicants will be asked to upload a 400-600 word essay on the Columbia Supplement to the Coalition Application responding to the following prompt: Please explain why you are interested in transferring from your current institution.
You will be able to view your admissions decision as well as an Application Checklist containing every required document through the Yale Admissions Status Portal. Additionally, you can use the Status Portal to submit requests for address changes, primary email changes, etc.

Columbia has extended its test-optional policy for both first-year and transfer applicants to Columbia College or Columbia Engineering through the 2024-2025 application cycles.
Paper applications are not available at Columbia University. All prospective students must apply online using The Coalition Application. Columbia University does not accept the Common Application for transfer candidates only.
You will be able to view your admissions decision as well as an Application Checklist containing every required document through the Yale Admissions Status Portal. Additionally, you can use the Status Portal to submit requests for address changes, primary email changes, etc.
Only specific periods of the admissions process are accessible for online tracking of admissions documents. An email explaining how to access their applicant portal will be sent to applicants. At that point, if you find that any items are marked as “not received/processed,” please ask your school to send the University a duplicate copy of any missing data as soon as possible by email at ugrad-confirm@columbia.edu. Processing documents sent by email may take up to one week. Before decisions are made, you will have time to submit the missing information without facing consequences.

Housing for Columbia undergraduates is assured for the entire four years of study. As a matter of fact, almost all undergraduates reside on campus, and residence requirements for first-year students exist.

Columbia’s admissions application process is largely the same for all students, regardless of their citizenship or country of residence.
International students are encouraged to apply for Early Decision programs. However, even extremely competitive international candidates who apply for financial aid but do not fall into the “need-blind” category may be deferred to Regular Decision so that the Committee on Admissions can assess the entire pool of international applicants.
To ensure that your admissions application is complete, please check your application status page. You must first choose “Reset Password” and adhere to the instructions in order to view your status page. Once you have turned in your financial aid documents, you will receive an email with tracking information instructions.
Candidates should keep their email addresses up to date throughout the application process because the majority of the University’s correspondence is sent via email.
