The South African National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative providing funding for South African students to attend higher education institutions. NSFAS is known for helping to make tertiary education accessible and affordable for students from lower-income households.

In January 2024, the NSFAS announced a major increase in its allowance for NSFAS students, effective in 2024. This increase, which is widely seen as an important step towards making higher education more equitable, will benefit thousands of disadvantaged South African students who rely on NSFAS to access higher education.

This article provides an overview of how NSFAS’s increased allowance will help South African students and how and when students can access it.

Eligibility for NSFAS Allowance For 2024:

To qualify for the NSFAS allowance in 2024, students must:

  • A South African citizen or permanent resident is required.
  • The total gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per year.
  • The combined gross household income (persons with disabilities) should not exceed R600,000 per year.
  • SASSA recipients are immediately considered financially eligible.
  • You must have an email address and a cell phone number.

Types of NSFAS Allowance for 2024:

The NSFAS allowance for 2024 comprises various components, designed to cater to students’ different needs. These allowances typically include:

Tuition and Registration Fees: NSFAS covers the full or partial cost of tuition and registration fees directly to the institution.

NSFAS Accommodation Allowance: Students who live in university or TVET college residences may receive an accommodation allowance to assist with their housing expenses.

NSFAS Meal Allowance: NSFAS provides a meal allowance to students who do not have access to university dining halls or who live off-campus.

NSFAS Book and Learning Material Allowance: A stipend is allocated to help students purchase essential textbooks and other required learning materials.

NSFAS Travel Allowance: Students who commute from their place of residence to their educational institution may be eligible for a travel allowance.

How Much is NSFAS Funding in 2024-2025?
