The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is now accepting applications for the 2025/2026 academic year, starting April 1, 2024. This applies to undergraduate programs (bachelor’s degrees), diplomas, higher certificates, and postgraduate diplomas in various fields, including nursing, midwifery, and accounting. UKZN Application Deadlines for 2025/2026 Academic Year
The application procedure for the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will start on April 1, 2024. However, the university reserves the right to change this date.
Application Deadlines for South African Citizens:
- Semester 1 (January intake):
- Medicine: June 30, 2024 (No late applications accepted)
- All other programs: September 30, 2024
- Semester 2 (August intake): The deadline has already passed on June 30, 2024.
Application Deadlines for International Applicants:
- Semester 1 (February intake): September 30, 2024
- Semester 2 (August intake): The deadline has already passed on June 30, 2024.
Please note:
- The university has the right to change application deadlines.
- Medical School does not accept applications from international students.
Who is eligible to apply for admission to UKZN in 2025/2026?
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) welcomes applications from the following categories of students for admission in 2025/2026:
First-time Applicants:
- South African citizens currently in Grade 12.
- Applicants who have completed their National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate and have never studied at UKZN before.
Transfer Applicants:
- Applicants currently registered (or have been registered) at another institution for undergraduate studies and wish to transfer to UKZN.
Applying for Admission to UKZN in 2025/2026: Your Options
There are three ways to apply for admission to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) for the 2025/2026 academic year. Each option is explained below:
1. Central Applications Office (CAO) Online Application:
This is the preferred method for most applicants. You can submit your application electronically through the CAO website. This option is generally faster and more efficient than the others.
2. Central Applications Office (CAO) Hard Copy Application:
If you are unable to apply online, you can request a hard copy application form from the CAO. Once completed, you must mail the form along with all required documents to the CAO.
3. Direct Application to the University:
In certain cases, you may be eligible to apply directly to UKZN. This option is typically only available for specific programs or international students. It’s crucial to check the UKZN website for programs accepting direct applications and ensure you meet their specific requirements.
Obtaining a Hard Copy Application: Three Easy Options
Here are three convenient ways to obtain a hard-copy application:
- Download from the CAO website: Visit www.cao.ac.za and click the designated link to download the application form.
- Contact the CAO by phone: Call 031 268 4444 to request a hard copy application be mailed to you.
- Fill out a pre-printed form: Obtain a hard copy application form directly from the CAO office.
Follow the steps outlined below to apply via CAO.
- Visit the CAO website: http://www.cao.ac.za/
- Click on the “Apply” tab.
- Read the application instructions carefully.
- Click on “Continue with Application”.
- Enter your ID number or passport number and click “Submit”.
- Scroll down and click “Continue with Application” again.
- Enter the required details and click “Next”.
- Click on “Continue with Online Application”.
- Follow the instructions and complete the online application form.
- Submit your application for evaluation.
Direct Application to UKNZ 2025/2026
- Visit UKZN Website: Head to www.ukzn.ac.za and explore the application resources.
- Download Application: Obtain the application form online and fill it out completely.
- Program Selection: Clearly state your preferred program choices on the first page.
- Previous Enrollment: If you’ve been a UKZN student before, include your existing student number.
- Accommodation Preference: Indicate your interest in on-campus housing, if applicable.
- Proof of Payment: Attach a copy of your application fee payment receipt.
- Submission: Choose your preferred method:
- Mail: Send the completed form with all required documents and payment proof to the address provided on the application cover page, ensuring it reaches them by the closing date.

- New Student Number: New applicants will receive a unique student number upon successful application.
