Prospective students planning to start their studies at the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2026 are invited to apply starting on April 1, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to complete and submit their applications as soon as possible, as there are limited spaces available.

This guide provides everything you need to know about the University of Pretoria’s 2026 application cycle, including the application dates, application fees, required documents, and instructions on how to apply online.

Key Deadlines for University of Pretoria Undergraduate Admissions

Applications for most undergraduate programs at the University of Pretoria are due by June 30, 2025. However, the Faculty of Veterinary Science has an earlier deadline of May 31, 2025. Be sure to submit your application materials early to avoid missing out on your desired program.

Ensure strict adherence to the following:

  • Internet access connectivity
  • An email address you regularly check since you will get a confirmation email with your student number (EMPLID) as soon as your online application is submitted.
  • All the required documents must be in PDF formats (Scanned)
  • Documents are labeled correctly
  • There is no encryption or passwords on the file

Supporting Documents Required For the UP Application Process

It is not necessary to certify these documents. This is the result of the worldwide pandemic

  • South Africa Identification Number/Passport
  • Final School Results –Grade 12
  • Proof of payment of application fees

How to Apply Using the University of Pretoria Online Application System

The Online Application System is for new prospective students applying to UP for the first time, not for current students. Follow the steps provided to complete your application.

  1. Visit the Application Portal: Go to www.upnet.up.ac.za/psc/upapply.
  2. Start a New Application: Select “Start New Application” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Accept Privacy Notice: Click “OK” on the privacy notice pop-up.
  4. Enter Personal Information: Fill in your details as requested.
  5. Security Code: Ensure the characters in the security code field are correct.
  6. Proceed to Next Step: Click the “Go” tab, and read the disclaimer carefully before proceeding (do not discard the page).
  7. Complete Application Form: Fill in your details in the provided fields and select “OK.”
  8. Confirm Application: On the next page, review and confirm your application, then click “Continue.”
  9. Receive ID and Temporary Password: A unique ID and temporary password will be emailed to you. A working email address is required.
  10. Login: Use your ID and temporary password to log in via the link in your email.
  11. Create a New Password: If you wish, create a new password.
  12. Save Progress: Click “Save and Next” to continue.
  13. Edit Application: The application summary page is now editable. You can make changes and upload necessary documents in the required format.
  14. Application Fee: Pay the non-refundable application fee via the university’s official account.

Please take note: Receiving a student number (EMPLID) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of Pretoria yet. Admission is a separate process that your application undergoes after being evaluated by the relevant faculty

What is EMPLID: It is simply  a unique number that identifies each student in the Student Information System (SIS)

University of Pretoria Admissions requirements

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • Mathematics: 5 (C Symbol: 60%-69%) (Note that Mathematical Literacy will not be accepted)
  • Physical Science: 5 (C Symbol: 60%-69%)
  • English or Afrikaans: 4 (D Symbol: 50%-59%)
  • Life Orientation: 4 (D Symbol: 50%-59%) (Excluded when calculating the APS)
  • Two other subjects: 4 (D Symbol: 50%-59%)
  • An Admission Points Score (APS) of 32
