Undergraduate applications:

When to Apply to South African Universities as a Domestic Student

Grade 12 Students:

In South Africa, most universities open applications for undergraduate study between April and August of your Grade 12 year. Applicants typically submit their final Grade 11 results, and if a provisional offer is made, it becomes confirmed once their Grade 12 results are released. A few universities may allow early applications as early as February or March, although this is less common.

Grade 11 Students:

Some universities allow early applications during Grade 11, using your mid-year or preliminary results. This can give you a head start in securing provisional offers, but you must still meet all Grade 12 final requirements to confirm your place.

2027 University Applications in South Africa: Opening Dates for All Major Institutions

All universities in KwaZulu-Natal, including the Durban University of Technology (DUT), University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), and the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), along with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) in Johannesburg, will officially open their applications for the 2027 academic year in March 2026.

Entry and Admission Requirements

National Senior Certificate (NSC): This is the standard high school leaving qualification in South Africa. You’ll need to have passed at least 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (50-59%) or better, including English and any required subjects for your chosen degree program. Prospective students should apply with their final Grade 11 (or equivalent) results.
