Nsfas Application Requirements 2024/2025
According to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999), a government organization known as NSFAS was created under the Department of Higher Education and Training to help financially disadvantaged students who want to continue their education at public universities or TVET colleges.
If you’re a citizen of the Republic of South Africa who wants to enrol in a public university or TVET institution and comes from a family with a household income of R350 000 or less, you may be qualified for funding from the Nsfas for your academic-related activities in either university or college.

Are you qualified per this list?
- Every qualified person from South Africa
- Every SASSA grant recipient qualifies for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
If you fall under this category, don’t apply for funding:
- students who have earned a prior credential.
- students whose household income is greater than R350 000 annually.
- students who have previously applied, been approved, and been given financial aid. In the event that students pass their modules and fulfil the academic requirements, they are immediately financed for the remainder of their studies.
- students from abroad (any student who is not a South African citizen).
Supporting Documents Required: If applying online, each of the following papers must be uploaded separately and scanned into a pdf format.
Remember this: Provide your active phone number and a working email address.
- A copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
- Copies of parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s national identification cards
- If necessary, proof of income or a year’s worth of IRP5
- Your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s proof of income.
- You do not need to present any proof of income if you are a SASSA grant recipient.
- A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form should be provided and submitted by all applicants with a disability.
- An applicant identified by the Department of Social Development as a Vulnerable Child must also submit a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
Application Requirement for Nsfas Funding: You need also to be qualified academically to secure funding
- You need to have passed Grades 9 to 12 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a TVET college and Grade 12 to receive funding to study at a university or TVET college.
- If you are approved for NSFAS funding, you will be required to meet the academic admission requirements of the university or TVET college before NSFAS allocates any funding to you.
