The University of Johannesburg (UJ) will start taking manual applications for the 2026 academic year on April 1, 2025. Although each program has a different deadline, the general application period runs from April 1 to October 31, 2025. We encourage you to apply right away

How to Apply for the 2026 Academic Year at the University of Johannesburg

You must download and submit a hard-copy application form to apply for the 2026 academic year at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Be sure to submit all required documents within the application period. While UJ accepts paper applications, it encourages all first-time students to apply online through the portal: www.uj.ac.za

Application Fee for Paper-Based Applications

Applicants who submit a paper application must pay a non-refundable application fee of R200. The fee must be paid by cheque to the First National Bank (FNB) UJ account (account number 626 158 73280) at FNB Client Services. Please use your student number as a reference.

Paper Application Steps for Joining UJ University

If you prefer to apply using the application form (hard copy), follow the steps below.

Step 1: Search for a course

  • Download the prospectus, read the requirements, and select at least 2 study courses.
  • Ensure you satisfy the requirements

Step 2: Application Fee and Form

  • If you’re a new applicant (without a University of Johannesburg student number), pay the R200 application fee.
  • Complete every section of the form with a pen

Step 3: Submitting Your Application

  • Drop off your completed application form and application fee payment at any of our four campuses.
  • Allow three weeks before contacting us about your application status. We’ll reach out if your application meets the minimum standards and space is available in your chosen program.

What are the minimum requirements for a Degree, Diploma, and certificate?

Bachelor’s Degree: A NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the Higher Education Institution (HEI), coupled with an achievements rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in any four (4) NSC subject except Life Orientation.

Diploma: A diploma pass requires 40% in four higher credit subjects and 30% in three lower credit subjects, and you may fail one subject.

Certificate: A certificate pass requires a 40% pass in your home language, 2 subjects above 40%, 4 subjects above 30% and you may fail 1 subject. This pass allows you to study for a higher certificate.
